A 19-year-old Northern Territory woman has been reported for drink driving and driving unlicensed after police stopped her vehicle in Coober Pedy today.

Police stopped a Toyota 4WD on Robins Boulevard about 12.15pm on Monday, 19 October, and breath tested the driver. She allegedly returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.216 — more than four times the legal limit.

The vehicle was impounded and towed from the scene. The woman will be summonsed to appear in court at a later date.

The incident comes amid encouraging local reports that Coober Pedy’s police station is approaching a full complement of officers, following the filling of most previously vacant positions.

Word around town is that just one position remains vacant. While that figure has not been officially confirmed by SA Police, the increased police presence has been noticeable on local streets. For a remote community, having the station close to fully staffed is a welcome development.

Police reminded motorists that drink driving remains one of the major causes of serious and fatal crashes on South Australian roads, urging road users to plan ahead and avoid driving after consuming alcohol.
