Police are again calling on Coober Pedy residents to assist with an investigation following a series of vehicle break-ins, the theft of a motorbike and the recovery of property believed to have been stolen.

Several vehicles parked at a motel on Crowders Gully Road were targeted between 3am and 3.15am on Friday, 25 September.

Police say windows were smashed to gain entry, with cash and a number of personal belongings stolen from the vehicles.

A KTM motorbike was also taken from the rear of a four-wheel drive. The motorcycle was recovered later that morning on Italian Club Road.

Investigators want to hear from anyone who saw the KTM motorbike being ridden around Coober Pedy or who may have CCTV, security-camera or dashcam footage recorded during the early hours of Friday morning.

Even seemingly minor footage—such as a motorbike, person or vehicle passing a home or business—may help police establish where the stolen motorcycle was taken and who was involved.

Jewellery owners sought

While making enquiries into the offences, Coober Pedy police arrested a 37-year-old local man after allegedly finding him in possession of several rings and other property believed to have been stolen.

He was charged with unlawful possession and granted police bail to appear in the Coober Pedy Magistrates Court on 30 November.

Police have released images of the jewellery and are asking anyone who recognises any of the pieces to contact the Coober Pedy Police Station.

The unlawful-possession charge should not be taken to mean that the man has been charged over the Crowders Gully Road vehicle break-ins. Police have not alleged any such connection in their public statement, and investigations into the break-ins are continuing.
