Coober Pedy’s next Opal Festival will be held from 18–20 June 2027, with a new teaser offering a little certainty about the calendar—and a little mystery about what’s coming.
The dates are locked in, so locals and visitors can start marking their calendars and planning a June weekend in the opal capital.
The theme, however, remains under wraps.
The festival’s new promotional artwork takes a striking approach: a mostly black-and-white outback landscape, framed by gum leaves and rugged stone. But look a little closer and something breaks through the monochrome.
A narrow seam of colour winds its way through the rock.
Is that simply a nod to the precious stone at the heart of the festival? Or has a clue to this year’s theme been hiding in plain sight?
The accompanying words do little to settle the question: “Something is beginning to show…”
Something beneath the surface? Something waiting to be revealed? And why hold back almost all the colour in a celebration built around one of nature’s most colourful gems?
For now, readers are being left to join the dots—or follow the seam.
The theme reveal and further festival details are still to come. In the meantime, there is one part of the picture that needs no guessing: 18–20 June 2027 is the weekend to save.
Take another look at the artwork. What do you think it’s trying to tell us?
