Coober Pedy's rich multicultural heritage was on full display on Sunday as the Serbian Orthodox Church of St Prophet Elijah welcomed visitors from across Australia to celebrate its annual Parish Slava, one of the most significant events on the church's calendar.

The special service was held in the town's iconic underground church and was presided over by His Grace Archbishop Siluan, Archbishop of Australia and New Zealand, who travelled to Coober Pedy to lead the celebrations.

Among those attending were members of Coober Pedy Police, continuing a tradition that has become an important symbol of the close relationship between local law enforcement and the town's diverse community.

According to South Australia Police, officers are invited to the annual celebration each year as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen relationships with local community groups and to recognise the important role that faith and culture play in the Far North community.

Visitors made the journey from across Australia to attend the Parish Slava, highlighting the significance of the Coober Pedy parish within the wider Serbian Orthodox community.

Sergeant David Finlayson of Coober Pedy Police said the event reflects the strong multicultural identity that has helped shape the town over many decades.

"Coober Pedy Police take pride in honouring the diversity of the local community's strong and active migrant community. We were honoured to take part in the celebration of this significant religious event."
