Police are investigating after a person’s body was discovered in the Prospect area of the Coober Pedy opal field today.

The body is believed to have been at the location for several days and was reportedly being guarded by a dog. It is understood the dog was euthanised by council personnel before police could safely access the scene.

At this early stage, it is unclear whether the death involved suspicious circumstances or was the result of illness or misadventure. Police have not yet publicly confirmed the cause of death.

CID investigators arrived in Coober Pedy this afternoon. CFS personnel and paramedics were also called to the area later in the day, although the purpose of their attendance has not been officially confirmed.

The identity of the deceased has not been released.
